PC Review: Illyriad

A few months ago I was approached by the community manager of a web based MMO called Illyriad. I had some familiarity with the genre as I fumbled around one for a few weeks some years ago. However, some other player put me out of my misery by attacking my territory and utterly wiping me out. I put my bias aside and gave Illyriad a shot, it turned out to be pretty fun after all.

I started out with a small barren piece of land and a few resources. To describe Illyriad, I would compare it to an MMORPG version of Age of Empires. Naturally, as one would expect the objective is to harvest resources, grow your town, expand, research new technology, fight NPCs found around the map, and have a good time in general.

What I liked most about Illyriad was the ability to casually pop in, set a few buildings, queue some military troops, and research technology. On the other side of this coin, if you want to play Illyriad hardcore you can, but it’s going to cost you. I actually became so enamored with Illyriad for a while that I dumped a few dollars into purchasing prestige.

My primary town in Illyriad

Prestige allows you to instantly complete buildings in your queue (for whatever town you select), increase your resource gathering by 20% for a few days, increase the defenses of your troops, and a few other things. Prestige is handy, considering your upper level buildings can take upwards of 12 hours to a day to complete; the instant complete is a nice feature.

Whether you want to play for free or to pay for content is completely up to the player. I did a mixture of both. It is relatively inexpensive, and it can certainly get you up and running quickly.

Another key factor that helped me progress along were the other players. Amazingly, the players of Illyriad are, for the most part, very nice and willing to help you out. I joined an alliance and was sent multiple resource shipments. Perhaps the kind nature of the player base comes from the fact Illyriad is UK based. In all, the other players are an invaluable resource.

Illyriad has a great niche. It’s a simple and fun game that is easy to keep running in a separate browser tab for most of the day. There is plenty to do and I would suggest that everyone with a few minutes goes and checks it out.

Pros:

  • Free to play, with pay to play option available.
  • Simple to learn, lots to do.
  • Casual game play makes it a fun background game.
  • Great community.

Cons:

  • The time factor, as you progress things take longer and longer and without prestige, you’re going to be doing a lot of waiting.
  • Did not run well on a mobile phone.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Beta Screenshot 57

Bioware and EA announced their plans for early access for Star Wars: The Old Republic. For those who have pre-ordered, beginning December 13 at 6am CST, they will be granted access to the game. Keep in mind however that they are doing a controlled launch, not everyone who pre-ordered will get in the game at that exact time. They are will continue to roll people in the game based on when they redeemed their pre-order codes. You will receive an e-mail stating when your account can access the servers.

During the stress test weekend in November, the game gathered over 725,000 unique gamers that logged in over 9 million hours of gameplay. It’s no secret that this game is going to be big and with the tiered early launch plan they are striving to make the launch as smooth as possible.

Star Wars: The Old Republic launches December 20 in North America and surprisingly, December 13 in Europe.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Jedi Consular Character Progression Video

Jedi Consular Screenshot

Bioware has released the official Jedi Consular progression video for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Like all progression videos they show us how the class plays at the beginning of the journey and branches off to show us the two paths players can take when they choose an advanced class at level 10.

The Jedi Consular is the mage version of the Jedi and can branch off into becoming a Shadow or a Sage. The Jedi Shadow is melee oriented. They invest in stealth to attack opponents from behind and do massive damage. If you love to sneak around and burst opponents down, this is the job for you.

The Sage on the other hand is all about the force. They specialize in a wide variety of magical attacks coupled with crowd controls spells and healing abilities, they are the goto class for people who enjoy playing a mage.

Otherland Developer Trailer – A Game within a Game

Being developed by Gamingo and RealU, Otherland, a free-to-play action MMORPG based on the virtual reality novels by Ted William is very interesting. It’s a game within a game. The game takes place within a virtual world of a virtual world. By doing this, it gives them the freedom to explore a plethora of genres when designing the world.

In the video Lead Quest Designer Shawn Pitman talked about the advantage of Otherland’s setting, “The Multiverse itself is one of the most exciting things to me on Otherland, because of the fact that it allows me and the rest of my team to explore options that aren’t typically available in an MMO. You’re usually stuck with one genre, and you can start moving outside of those boundaries.”

He goes on, “Once they(players) play Otherland, I hoping that they start questioning their own reality. There were some movies awhile back that presented the idea that maybe the world we live in, isn’t really the world we live in. This idea here is what I’m looking for, which is maybe the world you live in is more than you actually thought it was.”

Working close with the author, boasting a multinational team, and creating a unique setting, RealU looks to make a splash with Otherland sometime in 2012. In the words of RealU CEO Andrew Carter, “It’s going be f****** cool!”

What are your impressions of the game, think they can pull it off? Video below.

CCP Reduces Staff by 20% To Refocus

CCP, game company known for Eve Online announced today in a blog post that they are cutting about 20% of their staff to refocus the company. The majority of the jobs being lost are at the company’s Atlanta, Georgia studio although some of their other offices in are taking a hit to.

Citing that developing two new games while supporting their existing one has strained the company’s resources much too thin. CCP is cutting down staff to refocus on developing Eve Online and their FPS that will operate in the same world, DUST 514 on the PlayStation 3. Their highly anticipated sandbox MMO, World of Darkness is taking the biggest hit, with the development team being reduced to a fraction of what it was.

For the immediate future, our mission is to enrich the vast EVE Universe by strengthening the continuous development of EVE Online while preparing to bring DUST 514 to market on the PS3. We do this in order to realize our ambitious and challenging plan of joining the two in a cross-platform, truly massive online world.

World of Darkness will continue development with a significantly reduced team. This team will continue to iterate and expand on the gameplay and systems they have designed. We will also redeploy creative teams in Atlanta to support the launch of DUST 514.

However, they maintain that Eve Online is healthier than ever with subscriber count steadily increasing until the recent missteps the company has taken with their customers.

With the refocus of development, players can expect an un-named expansion pack this winter for Eve Online as well as the launch of Dust 514 private trials.
