Beta Registration for Dust 514 Begins

I bet you've never seen an image of armed dudes running around explosions. You're welcome.

Developer CCP has begun accepting registrations for the beta of their upcoming free to play Playstation 3 shooter, Dust 514.

You can register here.

Dust 514 is supposed to let console players fight one another on planets in deep space at the same time that PC players fight, mine, and go about their merry spacey way in EVE Online.

Yes, EVE Online is the crazy persistent online space MMO. How crazy? Well, the game involves player-run corporations with their own deep space mining operations. It’s also worth mentioning that there are some players who are space pirates; oh, and that a group of players began organizing themselves in April 2012 to crash the in-game economy by attacking the economical nerve centre of the galaxy.

The beta will already be under way this week for “select players” of EVE Online and attendees of March 2012′s EVE Fanfest in Iceland, according  to developer CCP.

Check back on Vagary.TV on the week of June 3, 2012, when we’ll have more on Dust 514 when we see it at E3.

Coming to Stores: May 8th Edition

What’s more depressing for a writer who enjoys writing up a release list than a week with no games? A week with one game. It’s easy to just blow off a week, but to sit down and formulate something for one game is a let-down. While we had a short Vita-fix last week, it’s back to no games again. Luckily, one of the big Playstation 3 franchises returns.. ~ Don

Please note dates are subject to change, and these do not account for digital releases, which can sometimes be as important as retail releases. Don’s personal picks are highlighted in red.

Console

Playstation 3 only:

  • Tuesday, May 8 ~ Starhawk

Starhawk is finally upon us and features new multiplayer mechanics as well as something that it’s predecessor lacked, a single-player campaign. Warhawk was a beloved shooter exclusive to the Playstation library, and from everything I have seen on the game (I didn’t play in the beta) Starhawk looks like a solid sequel. The “Build and Battle” system looks to dynamically change the atmosphere from game to game, so if you are looking for something with a constantly-evolving battlefield, look no further.

Are you picking up this weeks sole-release? Why/why not? Let us know in the comments below.

Skullgirls PC to be cross-compatible with PS3

If you’ve been enjoying playing the crisp-looking female fighter Skullgirls, here’s a little bit of great news. Reverge Labs has confirmed via Twitter that the upcoming PC version of Skullgirls will be compatible with the Playstation 3. That means those of you fighting gamers can play against your friends who are their computer.

Reverge Labs will be optimizing the game as well as adding a few extra features for some the game modes. No release date has been revealed, but when it does release, you’ll be able to buy it on GameFly, GamersGate, GameStop PC Downloads, Origin, and Steam.

All is not awesome as Awesomenaut publisher goes bankrupt

It seems everything is not awesome as Awesomenauts release reels around this week.

The publisher for the digital only game DTP Entertainment filed for bankruptcy this sent other game news sites to speculate the game wouldn’t see release for either PSN or XBLA as first planned this week (or possibly ever according to some sites).

Luckily the developers for Awesomenauts stepped in to clear up the confusion.

“We have just confirmed that the game is coming this week. We cannot comment on the exact situation any further right now, but rest assured that you can all play Awesomenauts this week!” said Joost, a Ronimo Team Member on their Awesomenaut forums.

This probably comes as double relief for Sony seeing as they won’t have to scramble to find a replacement free game for PS plus users.

How DTP’s insolvency has effected any post launch updates for the game remains to be seen, but for now at least the game is coming out on schedule.

Coming to Stores: May 1st Edition

I’ll be honest. I ALMOST didn’t do a release list this week. Don’t get me wrong, the two games coming out look great. But two games are coming out this week. Is that worth making a new post, doing some format changes, trying to find some music to listen to, looking for that “killer pic” and then sending it on to be edited? In short- yes, it was. Enjoy the light week; it picks up in a few.. ~ Don

Console

Multi-platform:

  • Tuesday, May 1 ~ Sniper Elite V2 (PS3 & X360)

Store shelves won’t be bulking up this week, but what is lacking in quantity looks to making it up in quality with the one release coming out. Sniper Elite V2,  a sniper-centered game (shocker, right?), takes place during World War 2. Instead of running around with guns blazing, V2 is focuses on precision. I found a nifty gameplay video to share, so enjoy.

Sony Playstation Vita

  • Tuesday, May 1 ~ Mortal Kombat

We’ve covered the latest Mortal Kombat game twice now, and there are never enough good things to say about it. Now, the story-driven fighter finds its place on the Vita. Taking advantage of the hardware and packing more unique challenges, this edition lets you take the MK that everyone raved about last year with you anywhere. FINISH HIM!

Are you buying either of these? Why/why not? Let us know in the comments below!

Kickstarter’s video game only rival will kickback with dividends

Crowd-funding has become a hot topic within the video game industry since Tim Schafer or Double Fine gathered more than $3 million for a point-and-click adventure a couple of months ago through Kickstarter.com.

An estimated $9 million was donated in March alone by the salivating salvo of fans looking to give a hand up to those projects they wanted to see released into the market, according to Kotaku.com.

Hell, Kickstarter.com is set to triple the amount of money it garners for projects this year and video game Kickstarter projects are becoming more popular.

A lot of these Kickstarter projects rely on a reward system to goad donators into parting with some of their hard earned cash. Additional content, t-shirts, soundtracks and a whole barrel of different things have been offered to gamers as exclusive rewards for helping the team by backing them financially.

But Gambitious is debuting a crowd-funding platform that will act something like a ‘video game stock market.’ People will not only put their money on a game they want to see, but also a game they believe will be a commercial success, meaning they will see returns on their initial investment.

“A developer decides what percentage of the required funding people can buy. Someone who invests money in a project, becomes a shareholder and is entitled to dividends,” said Gambitious CEO Korstiaan Zandvliet.

The company is launching it’s platform at E3 this year. The crowd-funding platform will first be launched in Europe but the company wants to go international with it once they get the legal kinks worked out.

Coming to Stores: April 24th Edition

April is ending with a bang! Well, with at least one good console release, though quantity is still very slim. After a chaotic month like March, I am personally embracing this slow period. It gives me time to catch up on Mass Effect 2. Yes, Mass Effect 2, not 3…. ~ Don

Please note dates are subject to change, and these do not account for digital releases, which can sometimes be as important as retail releases. Don’s personal picks are highlighted in red.

Console

Multi-platform:

  • Tuesday, April 24 ~ Prototype 2 (PS3 & X360)

The sequel to a game that I never thought needed one, Prototype 2 looks more promising, strangely enough. I actually just watched the trailer (an ad on Youtube) and I am now genuinely wanting to play this game (Editor’s NoteDon is easily swayed by television ads, he once bought a GoJo. ^CS). It didn’t hurt having Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” as the song either. You’ll even encounter Alex Mercer, protagonist in the original Prototype game, as you unleash your devastating powers in this sandbox action game.

Handheld

Nintendo 3DS:

  • Tuesday, April 24 ~ Shifting World

The 3DS is the only portable system with any retail releases and it’s in the form of a black-and-white puzzler. Shifting World has a “Spy Vs. Spy” aesthetic and is loaded with puzzles to keep you occupied. With the contrasting colors, I would like to see how this looks in full-3D.

Are you picking up either game this week? Let us know why/why not in the comments below!

Coming to Stores: April 17th Edition

We’re back! Well, kind of. As you can see, there isn’t a lot.But with April being the beginning of a quarter and following the rush of games last month, it is a nice break. Things will start to pick up steam in the coming weeks, but for now, enjoy the trickle of games and catch up on those backlogs! ^_^ ~ Don

Please note dates are subject to change, and these do not account for digital releases, which can sometimes be as important as retail releases. Don’s personal picks are highlighted in red.

Console

Multi-platform:

  • Tuesday, April 17 ~ Deadliest Warrior: Ancient Combat (PS3 & X360)

X360 only:

  • Tuesday, April 17 ~ The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

Combining the digital releases, Deadliest Warrior: Ancient Combat brings some of the greatest warriors in history in epic clashes for you to control. Play as a pirate, ninja, samurai or specific warriors like Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great and many more. (Editor’s Note: You have no idea how hard it was to not rewrite the remainder of Don’s feature as a pirate) Based on the hit TV show, this game looks to cater to both history buffs and fighting game fans alike. On the complete opposite end of the book is the X360-exclusive re-release of last years hit PC game, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Witcher 2, which won more than a few awards last year, comes out at a perfect time after last month’s Mass Effect 3.

Nintendo 3DS:

Sorry, no Nintendo releases coming to retail this week.

Sony Playstation Vita

  • Tuesday, April 17 ~ Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention

The Playstation 3 version of Disgaea 3 comes to the Vita and in usual-NIS fashion, all of the DLC will be releasing with it. Not only that but the Vita version will boast all sorts of new features, like GPS funcionality, new moves, new bosses and a lot more. Any true Disgaea fan, whether you have played Disgaea 3 or not, will not have a complete collection without it.
