Wii & PS3 Review – X-Men: Destiny

PS3 Review: By Don Parsons
I am going to say two things, and I want you to say the first thing that comes to mind. “Action-RPG” and “X-Men”. Now I’m going to read your mind and say your first thought was X-Men Legends, a legendary action-RPG featuring Marvel’s finest team. When X-Men: Legends came out, I was in heaven. Mixing some of my favorite gameplay elements (button mashing and RPG mechanics) with my favorite superheroes was a golden idea. They followed it up with X-Men: Legends 2, then switched to the Marvel Ultimate Alliance branding. So you can guess that when I heard Silicon Knights, developers of Too Human, was working on X-Men: Destiny, I got excited. But the contents of this game are anything but exciting.
To set the stage briefly, Professor X has died, the X-Men are in shambles and led by Cyclops, and the Brotherhood is fighting for mutant supremacy. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s hard to expect more. While the overall story arch is generic, the actual writing to the story is atrocious. You play as a new mutant. By new, I mean you play a character without a developed story, and they try to develop this character in the span of the game. What would normally take months, if not years of comic book writing to go from “I have powers, I’m scared!” to “I’m ready to take on the world!”, X-Men: Destiny accomplishes in less than an hour of storytelling. Each character has a different background, but the main story remains the same; fight the Purifiers.

While you can’t play AS an X-Men character, you can plug in X-Genes, which give you some of their perks. For example, you have a suit (mostly for aesthetics), and three X-Genes you can equip. Equipping Wolverines offense gene raises attack, and regenerates health. Some genes change your appearance, like Colossus’ gene. There are a whole slew of X-Genes and suits, but they are randomly generated, which means if you have to restore a checkpoint, and get a gene again, it will be different. Or it might even be a suit. It’s a frustrating mechanic to say the least.

The whole “plug and play supermutant” was really what ruined this game for me. I could live with the choppy framerate, or the bad graphics. But between the terrible writing and the X-gene concept, I couldn’t stand the 5-6 hours I spent playing this game. Here’s the kicker, though, I actually beat the game in that amount of time!

In the end, this has been my biggest let down of 2011. And how not only Activision, but Marvel, could sign off on this baffles me to no end. If it wasn’t for the button-mashing side of me, or the trophies I earned, I would have given this a 1 alongside Ryan.

Pros: trophies, button mashing for modern brawler fans

Cons: everything else

Score: 2 out of 5

Wii Review: by Ryan Kenward
Any time a comic book becomes a video game, there is almost always very bi-polar results.  The games are either pretty good, or pretty bad.  Unfortunately X-Men: Destiny on the Wii is the latter.  The concept, was somewhat promising if not a little tired.  You control a new character who has just discovered their mutation, you must decide if you will join the X-Men, or the brotherhood when things go awry after the death of Charles Xavier.  The over arching story is a very generic X-Men theme, the X-Men want there to be peace between mutants and non-mutants and the Brotherhood wants mutants to rule over the non-mutants.The game utilizes comic book like panels for cut scenes, unfortunately these feel more like a cop out than anything else as the majority of the character models come across fairly sloppy.  Simple things like moving mouths during dialog were tossed to the wind, the games feels like it was rushed through development.  This rushed look is noticeable everywhere, very generic stages, repeated objects although different colors (cars for instance, which by the way you can’t interact with), repeated enemies.  Destiny does not look or play like a game of this generation. The ability to create your own mutant could have been cool, if it were not so limited.  There are only a few powers to choose from when you begin (3 to be precise) and from there you can “collect” the powers of other mutants by finding X-genes randomly, though these generally are pretty lame.  Also having to chose between 1 of the 3 characters is also another strike, since these characters are clearly non-canon why not let us generate our own heroes? You will easily button mash your way through the game, which luckily will be a fairly quick run.  How about the controls?  Your only option is Wiimote and Nunchuck, though what would have been the best would have been the classic controller (or just any other options at all) – the game won’t let you play unless you have the nunchuck connected to your Wiimote.  Stacking bad controls on top of a game that looks like the Wii may have been an afterthought is bad juju.

For those out there that may blame the Wii for X-Men: Destiny’s bad looks, consider Super Mario Galaxy and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Pros: Game is short.

Cons: Everything else.

Is NVIDIA 3D Vision for Everyone?

Back in March of this year, I posted an article about how my own personal opinions on 3D – specifically 3D gaming – drastically changed when I was introduced to 3D Vision.  nVidia has released a slew of interesting products since.  I recently received a shipment from nVidia with a few items: a 3D ready monitor (complete with 3D vision kit) and a new GPU (EVGA GTX 570).  I was very excited to dive into my game library to experience it all in 3D, but there was something that I was more curious about than anything else.

What would someone think that does not play games, nor has any real thoughts on the tech one way or another?  For this test, I used my wife as a guinea pig.  I quickly integrated the new components with my PC and brought up The Witcher 2, a game that looks phenomenal in 2D. It wasn’t a huge surprise that it looks just as good (if not even a little better) in 3D.  I called my wife into my office and asked her to put on the glasses. The first thing she said was, “Whoa.”  I knew this was a good sign.

She ran around a bit and took it all in.  My wife was very impressed, but I knew this wasn’t the game for her.  I fired up Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and had her try that out.  When she was a teenager growing up in Korea, she used to play first person shooters in the PC rooms with her friends.  She insists up and down that she isn’t interested in games, but when she saw Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in 3D, she was sucked right in.  I initially expected her to look around, be impressed and be done. I was proven absolutely wrong; by the second hour, I knew she was a believer.

My wife is the first person to dismiss anything related to video games; however, with 3D vision, this was not the case.  My wife typically hates 3D in the movie theaters, as it gives her a headache and makes her eyes tired. Though, with 3D Vision, she spent around two and a half to three hours without any complaints.  So returning to the question I posed in this article’s title, “Is NVIDIA 3D vision for everyone?” – if my wife is any measure to this question, then the answer is a resounding yes.  With 3D vision, it doesn’t matter if you are a techie, gamer, or just a checking it out because your husband made you. The end results will more than likely be the same — 3D Vision is outstanding technology that is impressive and fun for everyone.

** Note, you need a monitor or display capable of 120Hz as opposed to the standard 60Hz most monitors are still sold at today.

How Everything I thought I knew about 3D changed in an hour…

Today at PAX East, everything I knew (or thought I knew) about 3D gaming was completely blown away.

In the past, my experiences with 3D technology led me to believe that it was a novel concept and not a really something that could take off.  Today I was lucky enough to sit down with two fine gentlemen from NVIDIA who graciously showed me 3D Vision.  From the moment we began speaking, my attitude changed from somewhat pessimistic to very intrigued.  The first tidbit of information that perked up my ears was hearing how NVIDIA does business.  In the console gaming world, the hardware makers developer the hardware, create a basic software developer kit and give it to the software developers.  NVIDIA on the other hand, is much more hands on.  I was amazed to learn that NVIDIA actually embeds itself with software developers to ensure their products are comptable with 3D Vision.

After chatting about the company and some of their products, the final Coup De Grace was delivered to somewhat negative view of 3D technology.  I sat at a PC, complete with 3 monitors and 3D glasses.  At first I had prepared myself to have a headache like I usually do when I watch 3D Movies, however this fear was assuaged the instant I put the glasses on and looked at the screen.  Much to my amazement, I was witnessing a beautifully rendered game in outstanding 3D.  When trying to describe a visual technology, I find it extremely difficult.  The only thing I can say is if you were like me and you were resistant about 3D, especially in gaming you really need to sit down and try some of the latest products from NVIDIA.  You will be utterly blown away.  We at Vagary.TV hope that we can work with NVIDIA to bring everyone who visits our site up to speed with their technology and software.

As always,
-Ryan Kenward

E3 Days 1 & 2

Hello Everyone!

Sorry for the delay!  We’ve had one hell of a time getting our tech to work here in our low end hotels.  I am sorry we’re so far behind but I thought while I can I would post my blog on almost everything so far.  Please keep in mind that I will mostly just be sharing my notes and I will go into further detail later.  Overall, E3 has been a dream come true for all of us.  The first night we were all amazed by the Activision “Party” (Concert) – while the titles they showed were predictable and not very new or exciting, it was still a good time. It was nice to meet several IGN writers as well as Diggnation’s Alex Albrecht, several people at 5th Cell and Wayforward, the people at Game Focus (GameFocus.Ca), and so many others!  Aside from losing my car keys which was a night killer, the days have been a lot of fun so far.  I have a lot of video to upload soon and tons of pictures!  This also isn’t all of my notes!

Here are my notes on the Activision Party:

Activision Conference – More money spent on throwing parties than making new and original games.

Games Shown:
DJ Hero 2 – Meh
Rock Band: Heros of Metal – Very Meh
Other uneventfull Game
Call of Duty: Black Ops – Trailer was way cool because of the live orchestra and pyrotechnics

Performers:
Kayne West w/Usher
Jane’s Addiction
Bohemian Rhapsody Cover – (Which ruled)
NERD
Eminem w/ Rhiaana

My first real event was the Nintendo Conference – here are my notes.

Nintendo Conference – Winners of E3 2010

Reggie owes me a Big Foot Pizza :(
Miyamoto’s Entrance = Awesome
Zelda – Bow and arrow not controlling right… shield is a little funny too.  Sword feels good and its cool to have to defeat enemies by swinging different ways.  The art style is nice, its a good balance between OoT/TP Link with WW Link
Mario Sports – Eh.. could be fun.
Wii Party – Lame
Wii Dance – Lame
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (DS) Holliday 2010 – Looked very good, likely to be a great DS title.
Golden Eye: Wii Holliday 2010 = Hoping to relive the glory days.
Disney: Epic Mickey – Nice art style, awesome for hardcore Disney fans or for families/young kids, story mode seems interesting and the graphics look pretty good for a wii title
Kirby’s Epic Yarn – Fall 2010 – Unsure about this, could potentially be a great Kirby title or it could be just another game that uses epic in the title/
Dragon Quest: Sentinels of the Starry Skies – July 11
Metroid: Other M – I liked the way it was presented in the trailer, did not get hands on with it though.
Donkey Kong – Holliday 2010 – Looked very polished and fun, certainly harkening back to the olden days of DK Country and perhaps even challenging them by doing it even better.
Nintendo 3DS – Wow, what a show stopper!  This system is going to change gaming as we know it.  For those who haven’t seen it in real life, you’re missing out.  Don’t judge it until you’ve seen it.  This has a LOT of potential.
Kid Icarus for the 3DS – Holy shiz!  Finally a Kid Icarus title, the trailer shown looked amazing.  Loved every minute of it.

Kept watching teleprompter to see “The only way we can really show it off so you can understand …. IS BY GIVING YOU ALL ONE” – sadly, this never happened.

Natsume –

Lufia – Looks like it could be a really great game for the DS, really liked the art style.
Harvest Moon – Always have been a fan of the new series, and this game looks like it will be good too – however, its nothing earth shattering as far of new things.  There’s a bazaar you can sell stuff at… Yeah.

Square/ENIX - Nothing but disappointment… What happened to these guys?  Where did the passion go for making great games?  I wasn’t impressed by anything I saw.  (I did not see a few titles to be fair, but I don’t have high hopes for them)

5th Cell
Super Scribblenauts – Looks awesome!  They have added in adverbs so now players can make very unique objects like – “red metal flaming dinosaur” as put by Nathan (the lead animator) – which is sounds cool to me.

Bethesda
RAGE – Awesome so far, refreshing to see new IP with so much effort put into it.
Hunted – Like Gears of War meets gauntlet – was a lot of fun to play, the look and feel of the game was pretty good, camera was screwy a few times but the game isn’t scheduled for release yet so they have time to fix the minor issues.
Fall Out – New Vegas – Bound to be good.  Looks like Fallout 3 but in Vegas (Obviously)

Konami
Castlevania (XBox 360/PS3) – Game play looked sweet, awesome style.   Looking forward to it coming out.
Metal Gear (PSP) – Console seller?  Kojima strikes again with a very beautiful looking game.  The controls take some getting used to after being spoiled with dual analog but the buttons suffice.  Not a fan of the vertical sideways text menus… hopefully this changes (probably was because Japanese is written up and down, it was likely just quickly translated for E3 my best guess) – Multi-player is pretty cool too.

Sony
SOCOM4 (Played with the Move) – Liked the game a lot, looks like it will be awesome with dual analog control.  Sadly the move failed to impress me by being either over or under sensitive and not entirely accurate.  I have a lot of skepticism for this which I’ll discuss in the future – nothing I saw really sold me on it.

Ryan’s E3 Predictions

Only a few days until E3

Hello All -

In just a few days I’ll be taking the drive from Sacramento to Los Angeles for E3! Where Javi/Britt/Foz and Myself will be covering E3 this year for Vagary.TV! Honestly I’m a bit of an E3 N00b and haven’t had a lot of time to study up on what is expected to be there and what isn’t. So I thought I’d take as tab in the dark here at it.

Things I expect to see (or hope to see)
* A real life dinosaur.
* A UFO that may or may not be abducting poorly educated mid west farmers causing them to head down the path of binge drinking and chronic story tellin’.
* Andy Kaufman.
* A new Zelda game that looks like it wasn’t planned on a napkin at a local Denny’s.
* A new incarnation of the DS that isn’t only slightly bigger or with more cameras.
* An XBox game that I can pine over for the next year.
* Sony doing something original.
* Nintendo doing something to restore faith that its lost in hard core gamers in the past years.
* Reggie giving me a slice of a big foot pizza.
* Leonard Nimoy.
* Me not getting shot and or robbed near my unscrupulous hotel.

Things I am going to do.
* Record many videos of the events and the Vagary.TV crew – hopefully capturing a few interviews.
* Edit and post videos every night – this will be easy to do because I’m married and am 150% less fun than I used to be.
* Hand out -=20=- Vagary.TV shirts to random people.
* Give out my business card and pretend I’m a lot more important than what I actually am.
* Answer my wife’s calls at probably the most inconvenient times to prove I’m being a good boy.

Okay that’s all. Let me know how I did! Oh, and by the way please send your E3 questions/comments to us via e3-at-vagary.tv
