EA has announced today that an aggreement to purchase Popcap games has been settled at 750 million dollars. Popcap Games is the studio best known for games like Peggle and the ever-so-popular Plants vs. Zombies.
EA’s CEO, John Riccitiello, stated that Popcap is a talented studio, capable of driving EA toward it’s goal of a 1 billion dollar mobile market. The acquisition is seen to be mutually beneficial. According to Popcap games, the studio was specifically looking to be purchased by Electronic Arts.
“By working with EA, we’ll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience.”
The gaming industry is becoming just as much about casual and mobile gaming as it is core and console gaming, and it seems like the second largest games publisher in the world is on board. Popcap Games has already sold 150 million games across many mobile platforms and downloadable content services, such as Apple’s AppStore, Steam, PSN and XBL, and more.
