PAX East 2013: Heroes & Generals

Reto-Moto’s Free-to-Play (F2P) First-Person-Shooter (FPS) Heroes & Generals is set in a World War II environment, and contains many standard online FPS features.  Players can create custom characters via their flash based client directly through their website, however the game itself will run through their downloadable client.  There is a persistent online server and outcomes are determined in real time by player actions.  You can level up to unlock new weapons and perks, though contrary to many other unlock systems, perks must be unlocked by obtaining specific ribbons by performing actions.  One example would be getting a ribbon for sprinting.  Perks are unlocked by medals, which will require combinations of certain ribbons.

The game also features real time strategy elements (RTS) that will allow players to allocate resources and make other battlefield decisions.  The consequences also will play a role in determining the state of the persistent online world. The developers informed me that they do have multiple servers set up globally which currently are accessed by about 1,500 players, though the servers do not seem to have been put through more rigorous stress testing to support a larger community at this time. Heroes & Generals is currently in open beta testing and is published by Square-Enix.
