What to Watch – February 22nd Edition

It has been a rough beginning to 2013 in terms of quality releases. The sub-par to mediocre seem to be where the ceiling resides for most of the what has been showing at your local cineplex. There have been a few notable examples, Mama and Side Effects come to mind, but overall it has been one forgettable film after another. I have hope though that Dwayne Johnson can save us. Because The Rock says, his movie doesn’t suck.

Dwayne Johnson stars as a father trying to save his son in the action/thriller Snitch. It has an interesting premise that will see The Rock go undercover into a drug smuggling cartel trying to get the dirt he needs to help his son get out of trouble with the law. Early word is that it is “well-acted and thought provoking”

Theaters nationwide will also get the horror film, Dark Skies. Produced by some of the people that brought out Insidious and Sinister, two of the better horror films of the past few years, and starring Kerri Russell and J.K. Simmons, it has a pedigree of quality. However, the film was not screened for critics prior to its release and that is never a good sign.

The Blu-ray release front is a bit light this week, seeing the revenge thriller Girls Against Boys hitting store shelves along with Silent Hill: Revelation. This lull though will give you plenty of time to catch up on Game of Thrones Season 2 before its third season debut at the end of March.

And finally, if you are a film fan, The Academy Awards are on this Sunday night. My Movie Dudes co-host Jeff and I will be watching and commenting on them throughout the night before recording a new episode of Movie Dudes directly following.
