The year of Joseph Gordon-Levitt continues with director Rian Johnson’s genre bending time-traveler, Looper. Joined by a star studded cast of Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano and Piper Perabo, JGL works as a looper, a mafia executioner that kills people sent back from the future. Johnson blends sci-fi, crime and film noir stylings into the white knuckled thriller and Looper should be a must see for fans of those genres. Look for our review sometime this weekend.
Joining Looper in theaters is Hotel Transylvania and Pitch Perfect. Both films offer solid counter programming to Looper but I don’t think any of the three are going to be lighting the box office on fire this weekend and the small screen is where the real action is over the next seven days.
Grimm and Fringe both return tonight with their respective season premiers. On Sunday ABC lights things up with the return of Once Upon a Time for its second season and the debut of 666 Park Avenue. Expect reviews of both Monday. And finally, Supernatural returns to the air with its season premier on Wednesday.
On the Blu-ray tip there is a little something for everyone. The classic fairytale comedy, The Princess Bride gets a special 25th Anniversary set that is loaded with great special features for fans. And not to be outdone by Princess Buttercup, Cinderella escapes from the Disney vault in a special Diamond Edition set. However if princesses aren’t your cup of tea Jean-Claude Van Damme has a trio of releases hitting the format with Cyborg, Death Warrant and Double Impact. Wrapping it all up is Pet Cemetery, the incredibly cheesy, yet endearing horror film based on the phenomenal Stephen King novel.
So what will you be watching this week?
