Let me be completely honest with you; I really had no idea how to write this. One of the most anticipated games on my radar this year (probably even LAST year when it was announced), and I really didn’t know what to say about it. It’s been quite a few months since I travelled to Pandora and shot skags with my lovely Siren character and when I heard they were keeping the Siren class but changing her powers, I was borderline furious.
One of my last appointments at this years E3 was a trip to the Take-Two Interactive booth, with demos of both Borderlands 2 and Spec Ops: The Line. The Borderlands 2 hands-on was shared with my colleague, Royel, and we had the chance to play through a mission cooperatively. Picking up the 360 controller, we were allowed to chose from the full range of classes in the game (except the Mechromancer, which will be available sometime after launch) and distribute 20+ skill points however we wished. What character did I pick? If you answered “Siren”, you are correct!
I had to see if the changes to the only returning character were going to make or break my choice to pick her once the game hit retail. I could have picked the new Gunzerker that has garnered a lot of attention, or the new assassin character Zer0. But I picked Maya, and started my co-op quest with my companion Royel.
I can safely say, I am happy with the changes to the Siren. Sure, I will miss the Phasewalk ability and its power to outrun people and heal at the same time. However, being able to lock an enemy in the air and pelting them with bullets is equally as satisfying. I wasn’t just able to suspend small enemies in the air defenseless, either; I had huge, hulking machines bubbled up in the air for a short time while I eagerly waited for my shield to regenerate.
Loot was flying everywhere during our 30 minute tour through Pandora as we scurried along to finish our quest in the allotted time. It was such a fantastic, familiar rush that the details of the mission we were on are very blurry. Gear up fans because you’re in for a treat when September gets here.
