E3 2012: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Gameplay

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale is essentially Smash Bros but that doesn’t necessarily mean that people aren’t excited about it. Even I was highly suspicious of the title when it was first being shown off, being a recovering Super Smash Bros. junkie how could you really blame me?

Seeing the game played on stage, I wasn’t so much paying attention to what was being straight out aped from the titular Nintendo franchise but by what was missing. There were no damage percentages and what I thought were life bars turned out to be combo meters and building these combo meters gave you varying degrees of special moves that you could use to decimate your opponents. That’s about as different as it gets right now but it makes me wonder how the game is going to distinguish itself and hopefully diverge further from the formula as it goes on.

This game still gives me great pause when considering whether or not I’m actually interested in it. However, the playful mash up backgrounds of different franchises converging and the surprise reveal of the Big Daddy character are definitely pulling me in for a closer look. I’m hoping that what I’ve seen is only the beginning for this one and it’ll continue to come into it’s own as the reveals are made.
