Sony patents game stopping ads

Sony has patented the process of inserting advertising into video games that pause gameplay.

In what will no doubt become a fighting point for gamers if used in triple-A titles, the process allows for a server side signal to play the ads across multiple devices simultaneously. Speculatively, in multiplayer it would stop the action for all players to prevent anyone from taking advantage while others are are watching ads.. A small warning will pop up for the player when an ad is about to play.

“A method for use in advertising includes initiating playing of interactive content, suspending playing go the interactive content, displaying an advertisement, and resuming playing of the interactive content,” the filed patent reads.

The process was filed last July, though nothing has been done with it yet it may be a way to help gain more revenue for free-to-play titles.
