Once upon a time Memorial Day weekend was the indication that the summer movie season has started but The Avengers kicked the season off this year a month ago, dominating the box office with an impressive run. That impressive run is most likely going to come to an end this week though as Will Smith returns to the big screen with Men in Black III. Along with MiB3 in wide release this week are some solid counter programming in the way of a horror film and a movie about old people.
I like Will Smith, I think the guy has a ton of charm and is quite a talented actor. However, I am not going to sit here and tell you I am excited for Men in Black III. MiB2 came out a decade ago and it kind of sucked, now Smith and Tommy Lee Jones want to rewind time and make us forget about it? From what I’ve seen in trailers it looks cringe worthy, so my recommendation is a pass.
Countering the big budget thrills of MiB3 and The Avengers is the found footage horror film, Chernobyl Diaries, and the geriatric dramedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. If you are over the age of 55 then Hotel might be up your alley, that said my recommendation for the week is the Chernobyl Diaries. Maybe I am biased because I am fascinated by the nuclear disaster that took place in Chernobyl and I like horror films but regardless, to me it seems like the most compelling thing in theaters if you have already seen The Avengers.
Next week stuff really picks up with 3 double d’s.
What are you seeing this fine holiday weekend?
