Nintendo Officially Announces the 3DS Slide Pad and Firmware Update

Recently Famitsu revealed what we know now as the 3DS Slide Pad in their article about Monster Hunter. Today Nintendo officially announced the peripheral. It will retail for 1,500 Yen – about 20 US dollars and Capcom will be bundling it with Monster Hunter 3G in Japan.

The Slide Pad requires a single AAA battery to run.

Some other games that will support the 3DS Slide Pad will be  Resident Evil Revelations, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble, Dynasty Warriors VS and Kingdom Hearts 3D.

Along with the official announcement of the Slide Pad, in November the 3DS will be getting a firmware update that will allow it to record video with the option of recording in 3D. There will also be some goodies for 3DS owners who conquered the StreetPass challenges.

Will the games listed here merely support it or require it?

  • As far as I know, it will be supported and they haven’t mentioned that it would be required. It would be quite silly to base a control scheme off a peripheral device.

I played Snake Eater without this attachment, and it was a pain in the ass using the regular buttons as a “second” analog stick. It’s not pretty, but I suppose it is a viable solution, though we’ll see how natural it feels having the stick so far off from the buttons (usually its slightly under and to the left)
