Edmund McMillen, Co-creator of Team Meat, the developers that brought you Super Meat Boy, have announced a side project they’ve been working on – The Binding of Isaac. In McMillen’s words:
Isaac is a roguelike shooter based on the dungeon structure of Zelda (nes). At its core it controls like Smash TV / Robotron in a randomly generated semi-RPG world filled with powerups, items, and special abilities.
Instead of a traditional leveling system, Issac will use a robust item system. Every level has a treasure room, a shop, secret rooms, and a boss each providing the opportunity to collecting unique items. The game will have four sets of items: Usable, Special Weapon upgrades, Passive upgrades, and Stat boosters. He also notes that most of the items in the game stack so, as you progress, not only will you be a powerhouse on paper but visually as well. McMillen goes on to add:
The game currently has six “dungeons” spanning three chapters that include six bosses, 36 enemy types, four unlockable characters, and tons of dynamic happenings. In the end, we hope to top out at eight dungeons with over 10 bosses and 42 enemy types.. we have our work cut out for us for our Aug. launch.
The finished product will be available on Steam.
